Millwood, VA (PRWEB) January 10, 2012

Global NGO Project HOPE is highlighting the first free, comprehensive rehab (and prosthetic) facility in post-earthquake Haiti as a symbol of solidarity and life-changing hope for the people of Haiti, marking the second anniversary of the deadly quake on Thursday.

The rehabilitation facility at Adventist Hospital in Diquini, near Port-au-Prince, is known as “Chanje Lavi,” which means Changing Lives in Creole. The center, created by Project HOPE and partners, was hailed in 2011 by Haiti’s government disabilities agency as the only comprehensive, free rehab center in the country. Project HOPE, a US-based global health education and humanitarian assistance organization, says Chanje Lavi has helped thousands of patients in the past year alone. Residential facilities on site can allow patients in need to receive ongoing physiotherapy and prosthetic fittings, potentially accelerating their improvements.

“Clearly the earthquake was devastating by all definitions. Haiti had a fragile health care system and was a fragile country to begin with so the earthquake was the worst case scenario. The rehab center is a model for sustainability, which is crucial to building a more stable health infrastructure in Haiti,” said Jason Friesen, Project HOPE’s Country Representative in Haiti.

Chanje Lavi is a model integrated health program that supported and enabled the Adventist Hospital to become the leading orthopedic referral hospital nationwide. Initially treating earthquake victims, Chanje Lavi is now treating victims of traumatic injuries and chronically ill patients with rheumatoid arthritis and congenital defects such as club foot, among others. Care in the Center is complemented by home visits via community outreach, raising awareness about available services and addressing stigma to improve access and quality of life. To date, the rehab center has assisted over 4,000 patients and amputees with long-term chronic health needs. Developed with the support of international organizations like Project HOPE, Chanje Lavi will transition operations to the local Adventist Hospital in 2012.

“We are working with an array of local partners to raise awareness of disability and lessen the stigma against persons with disabilities and will be publishing a bilingual book on the subject in French and Creole to be distributed for free to over 5,000 people,” said Friesen.

“This innovative book is adapted to limited literacy in Haiti, using both an audio track and printed text, and telling the story of a woman’s rehabilitation journey. We hope it will serve as an inspiration to readers to seek services for themselves and others, and to improve the public’s understanding of disabilities in general.”

Within the year following the earthquake, Project HOPE also distributed more than $ 60 million of medicines and medical supplies to hospitals and clinics in Haiti and along the border in the Dominican Republic. Repeated cholera outbreaks present an on-going challenge, including over 6,500 deaths to date. After the initial deadly outbreak in 2010, HOPE sent medical volunteers and enlisted the service of an international team of cholera experts to train local health care professionals.

“While the cholera outbreaks diverted resources to be focused on these acute crises and slowed progress in other areas. It is important to recognize the significant strides that Haitians have made in the reconstruction efforts. I was here right after the earthquake – about a week after, and I came back a year later to work here full-time and saw a noticeable difference. If you had never been to Haiti before you would think it wasn’t in very good shape, but when you have the perspective of what it was before and now, two years later, you can see definite, tangible progress. Of course, the country still faces immense challenges and still needs the support of the international community,” said Friesen.

Project HOPE specializes in building long-term capacity after the initial shock of man made or natural disasters has passed and has left a rich legacy of health infrastructure around the world, helping to establish hospitals and clinics, train health care professionals and assess needs in places as diverse as China and Iraq.

“We are leveraging our successes in Haiti to continue strengthening the country’s health system. Currently we are reaching out to the Ministry of Health, five Haitian medical schools, and the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad (AMHE), to reform undergraduate medical education as Haiti does not produce enough doctors to meet the needs of its people. We are also working with a range of local partners to strengthen emergency medical care and disaster preparedness in rural communities,” said Courtney Guthreau, Project HOPE’s Regional Director for the Americas.

Project HOPE partnered with the U.S. Navy in the months after the Haiti earthquake in January 2010 to care for more than 1,000 Haitians aboard the hospital ship, USNS Comfort. In addition, HOPE provided volunteer doctors and nurses to support relief efforts at three separate hospitals throughout Haiti.

About Project HOPE

Founded in 1958, Project HOPE (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) is dedicated to providing lasting solutions to health crises, with the mission of helping people to help themselves. Identifiable to many by the SS HOPE, the world’s first peacetime hospital ship, Project HOPE now conducts land-based medical training and health education programs in 35 countries across five continents.

London, United Kingdom (PRWEB) January 10, 2012

The survey is intended to bring some transparency to the intellectual property market in the United Kingdom. Fellows and Associates decided to take the initiative and host the survey after the issue of market transparency came up in a meeting with one of their clients. “Our client mentioned that they would like to give fair remuneration in line with the general market trends, but there is no information out there to tell them what these trends actually are. As their staffing supplier, they asked us if we could provide any insight, and this is how the idea was born,” says Emma van Opstal, consultant for Fellows and Associates.

“It really is surprising that there are no objective salary statistics available for the intellectual property profession in the UK. People, including other recruitment firms, seem to operate on a general sense of value for money when hiring new attorneys, and salaries are not widely discussed amongst colleagues or friends. The only time one will hear of a person’s salary is when they move jobs. This can create quite a skewed perception of the market and the position of one’s own salary within it,” says Emma.

Salary transparency has long been commonplace in the broader legal profession, where there are salary surveys by various different organisations on a yearly basis, and statistics are publicly available. On top of that, big law firms tend to benchmark their salaries to stay competitive. By hosting this survey, Fellows and Associates hope to offer the benefits of this level of transparency to the IP profession. The salary survey has received support from various well-known figures in Intellectual Property, and aside from the Fellows and Associates website, it will be posted on the prominent IPKat and SOLO IP blogs.

The anonymous survey will run until the 7th of February. Once completed, participants can request to receive an email copy of the results. This analysis will also be published by Fellows and Associates in mid-February, and will be publicly available on their website. According to Emma, “this survey is undoubtedly going to make a difference, so please spread the word to all your IP friends and colleagues in the UK!”

About Fellows and Associates

Emma van Opstal holds a BA (Hons) and MA in Social Sciences from two leading Dutch universities. Having previously studied and worked abroad in Europe, Asia and Australia, Emma joined Fellows and Associates in January 2011 and has since obtained her CertRP qualification. Within IP recruitment, Emma’s focus is on the international and corporate markets.
Celebrity Chef Michael Feker, along with IL MITO’s service and culinary teams, are celebrating their five year culinary birthday on Thursday, October 27 at 7 pm. Feker shall host an unparalleled celebration where guests will enjoy a three-course dinner with complementing wines, personally created by Feker as a thank you for their support. Guests will also learn from the expertise from one of Wisconsin’s great wine sommeliers. “I opened the original IL MITO in LA, love and opportunity brought me to Milwaukee, and now it warms my heart to celebrate this special day with my family, my team and my guests, who are now my extended family. I am so grateful for their support,” shared Feker.

IL MITO also offers full-service, on-site catering. Feker glows with a warmth of joy when explaining why Catering by IL MITO is so special to him; “I am always honored to be allowed to share in special events in people’s lives. It is my mission to allow the host/hostess to be a guest at their own event.” IL MITO offers menus of various cuisines, for example: Italian, Mediterranean, Latin, French, Middle Eastern etc and menus are created personally by Chef Feker to pamper palates and accommodate budgets.

Feker took his love for food one step further and created CMFs School of Culinary Magic, a Culinary Studio and a Chef’s Counter adjacent to his restaurant where he personally hosts private dinners, beer and wine tastings, one-on-one, hands-on lessons with Chef Feker as well as TV filmings and much more: “I have been blessed with my passion for life that I manifest through food, but to be able to absorb more I need to share some. I do that at my Chef’s Counter through my demonstrational and hands-on cooking classes. It is my mission to bring all back to the table, whether mine or theirs is irrelevant, as long as I have a chance to answer the complicated unknowns, and make cooking an accessible and joyful experience.”

San Francisco, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) April 07, 2011

In 2008, 64 percent of business executives spoke two or more languages. People who are bilingual in Spanish and English are in particularly high demand for business executive positions in the U.S. due to the large Latino population across the country. To prepare the next generation for success in a globally-oriented marketplace, parents are exposing their children to foreign languages and cultures at an increasingly younger age. Lango, a foreign language program for kids, has seen interest in its language classes grow dramatically in the last four years.

“The jobs of the future will demand foreign language skills and increased cultural awareness,” said Michael Fee, managing director of Lango. “Our globalized society demands a globalized workforce – and that means being comfortable working with multiple cultures and speaking multiple languages.”

Becoming multilingual can be a life-long process, one that best starts from childhood. Linguists have reported that the human brain is wired for learning and retaining new information during childhood, as children are more open than adults to the new sounds found within foreign languages. Copying unknown sounds can be difficult for adults, which is one reason why they are less likely to develop a second language and native accent as proficiently as children. Adults tend to translate, whereas children speak a new language naturally.

Parents are taking advantage of their children’s natural ability to learn and retain a new language by enrolling their children in foreign language education classes such as Lango. Lango offers engaging Spanish, Mandarin and French classes for children ages 18 months to 11-years-old in more than 70 communities across the U.S.

“I have a two-year-old and want her to be exposed now, not when she is 14,” said Jessica Murrell, owner of Lango in Durham, North Carolina. “My goal with Lango’s foreign language courses is to expose children to foreign languages at an early age so they will be able to travel, work abroad, and be competitive in a global job market.”

Careers where bilingual skills are especially valued, both now and in the future include:

Health Care

Jobs in health care are expected to increase by 22 percent by the year 2018. In addition, the Census Bureau reported that the U.S.’s Hispanic population has grown 43 percent since the year 2000. As the U.S. Hispanic population continues to grow and health care jobs increase, more Spanish-speaking health care professionals will be in demand.

Business

As China’s influence in the U.S. continues to grow, Mandarin is being referred to as the business language of the future.

Hospitality

Major cities and tourist destinations attract visitors from all over the world. Hotel and restaurant employees need the ability to communicate with guests to guarantee customer satisfaction.

Education

Public school teachers are increasingly faced with students who do not speak English, especially in states with large Hispanic populations such as New Mexico, California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Colorado. In addition, bilingual teachers often earn higher salaries than teachers who only speak English.

Government

The U.S. government’s National Security Education Program (NSEP) works to strengthen national security through critical language and culture expertise. The NSEP finds more than 70 languages critical for working in national security, one of which is Mandarin.

About Lango

Lango (http://www.langokids.com) was established on the belief that every child should learn a second language. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, Lango teaches children ages 18 months to 11 years new languages in full immersion classes through Adventure Learning©, an innovative approach that combines stories, music and movement, playacting, and game-playing in an engaging format that kids love. Lango is a division of Intrax, a family of organizations that provide a lifetime of high quality educational, work and volunteer programs that connect people and cultures, with operations in more than 100 countries worldwide.

(Vocus/PRWEB) April 18, 2011

More than 200 George Fox University students will embark on international study trips to Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and New Zealand in May.

The college study abroad tours are part of the university’s Juniors Abroad program. Since 1987, the program has sent third- and fourth-year students on three-week overseas study trips led by professors. Excursions have reached every continent except Antarctica. George Fox pays transportation and program costs; students pay room and board. Each trip holds preparation classes during the spring semester.

George Fox is a national leader in study-abroad participation. Fifty-four percent of the university’s traditional undergraduates study abroad before graduation. According to data compiled by U.S. News & World Report magazine for its 2011 “America’s Best Colleges” issue, George Fox ranks No. 49 out of approximately 1,400 accredited institutions in the nation in percentage of students studying outside the country. George Fox also was among the top five Christian colleges in study abroad participation.

This spring, the university is sponsoring 11 study tours. The following are brief descriptions of this year’s Juniors Abroad trips.

Nicaragua: This integration trip is primarily for psychology majors, and is designed to inspire students to combine their faith in God with their knowledge of psychology as they serve and learn from at-risk girls who were rescued from a life of poverty.
Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) July 02, 2011

There’s more to the operations in Afghanistan than combat. Every day, soldiers stationed in Afghanistan are reminded of this fact as they interact with the locals, deliver supplies, and help to rebuild the country. Currently, communication often requires the presence of translators. How might a personalized guide to the local language help?

Lieutenant David Duffus, of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, spent 9 months learning Dari had this to say, “It just helps you break the ice with the locals … I can talk directly to the soldiers without needing an interpreter and when we are under fire that can save lives – ours and theirs. The Department of Defense publishes an annual “Strategic Language List” to give the services guidance on languages for which there is a critical need. Dari is one language that is on the immediate list for all branches of service.

TripLingo’s Dari application will facilitate improved relations by promoting colloquial communication and cultural awareness between locals and the military. The connections forged by meaningful communication are invaluable – helping people overcome challenges, collaborate, build trust and mutually beneficial relationships. The House Armed Services Committee stated that foreign language, regional expertise, and cultural awareness are critical and essential to all DOD missions. TripLingo hopes to contribute in some small way to our success in Afghanistan.

Jesse Maddox, CEO and founder states, “Having family members serving in the military highlighted the needs faced by the troops on the ground. I knew TripLingo could help travelers, so we crafted a version with the same ease-of-use, quality, and relevancy for these brave Americans. We‘re just a small startup, but we felt that a Dari version could make a small difference and maybe even save a life.”

TripLingo creates iPhone applications that help ease communication by providing individuals with the right phrases for the right occasion. Currently TripLingo offers language-learning solutions for Spanish, German, Italian, French, and Brazilian Portuguese. The newly formed startup is providing the Dari app to the military and any interested civilians for free. This app will be released for July 4, 2011, in honor of our troops and Independence Day.

TripLingo is the leader in culturally aware language learning for the iOS platform. TripLingo upgrades trips for business and leisure travelers by making it easy and fun to learn the local language and culture by providing customized relevant phrases and content on your IOS device. Five country / language combinations released to date with five more languages and platforms launching soon, TripLingo is a fun, personalized language guide that helps you talk like the locals and maximize your travels.
(PRWEB) May 25, 2011

The time when language trips were exclusively designed for parents is now over. Since the motivation mostly comes from the teens themselves, the choice of the destination does too. Teenagers are looking for urban culture; they want to experience the dynamism of big cities. It is therefore essential to develop juniors programs that meet their wishes » explains Gautier Oudot from the ESL Head office in Montreux (Switzerland).

Paris: learn French at the foot of the Eiffel Tower

26% of parents in Europe want their children to learn French*. It is a strategic choice: French is the third most widely spoken language in Europe, after English and German. Every teenager who wants to learn French doesn’t necessarily want to go the sea, declares Gautier Oudot. Paris offers a first-class cultural agenda. We now provide more sports activities and offer extraordinary language trips. The language courses in total immersion that take place in the French capital are especially designed for teenagers between 13 and 17 years and ensure them professional supervision and a safe environment.

The U.S.A.: the American dream in the original version

Between 5.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m., more than half of all teenagers watch TV*. Many teenagers dream of visiting the cities they see in TV serials or in films » explains Gautier Oudot. Young people from 14 years can immerse themselves in the English language and culture during a language course in New York, Boston or Los Angeles for instance. And this, in an ideal and safe environment since they will be staying on real American university campuses (for instance Harvard in Boston or UCLA in Los Angeles).

The ESL difference

Language learning first! ESL selects only recognized partner language schools that are accredited by international quality labels. Besides, with ESL, you are sure not to find yourself in a group entirely made up of teenagers speaking the same language as yours. The participants come from whole world, which allows each of them to live a unique experience in an international atmosphere.

France is the number 1 vacation destination for Americans and the number 3 for Europeans. This means that any child who can speak French has a great career advantage over his or her peers. Online French for children courses are superior to being taught French at school for the following reasons:

1. Most online French for children courses have downloadable audio modules that your child can upload to their mp3 player and listen to as often as he or she like.

This would provide immersion. It has long been known that when a child is immersed in a new language they learn it much easier. If your child has the material on an mp3 player the can listen to the material when in the car, walking to school or playing on the Playstation.

          ]]>

2. Learning online is easy because children really enjoy it. They become truly engaged by the games on offer where they match the French words up with the pictures.

3. Some online French courses contain modules that use the four key educational elements. These elements are reading, writing, speaking and listening! Teaching at school tends to focus on just reading and writing which is why children become bored and feel less engaged.

Kids learn far easier when all four elements are used because a larger area of the brain is utilized. In addition what has been learned is more easily remembered.

4. Children can get practical experience online by the use of forums. This is what they will never get at school!

Your child can make friends with other kids their own age and level. They can open chat windows and if you have a head set, they can communicate with them verbally…in French of course! This provides the combination of immersion and practical experience with the crucial speaking and listening as well as the reading and writing key elements.

5. If you opt to go for a private tutor to teach your child French, it will cost you around per hour for a good tutor. For a good online French for children course, you will be looking to pay a one off fee of around 100. That’s an easy decision to make!

Tempe, AZ (PRWEB) November 13, 2006

Cultural Experiences Abroad (CEA), an Arizona-based organization offering comprehensive study abroad programs for college students, announced recently that it has retained the services of Dr. Geoffrey Bannister for the 2006-2007 academic year to assist in further strengthening CEA’s academic culture and academic quality assurance processes.

Caroline Walsh, Director of Development at CEA, says, “CEA has been a leader in study abroad for the past several years, but in order to maintain a healthy organization, let alone expand it, you have to be willing to listen to the wisdom and experience of others. Dr. Bannister is a wonderful addition to the CEA family, because his mentorship provides us with a keen insight that will enable .us to keep moving forward without veering off track.”

Dr. Bannister is a former Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Boston University; former President of Butler University, Indianapolis; and for the last four years he has been a founding director and the first chief executive officer and President of The Forum on Education Abroad.

Dr. Bannister, in his capacity as a consultant, will advise CEA in the following areas:

Academic Advisory Board

Academic Oversight of all GlobalCampus centers

Curriculum Development for GlobalCampus Network and Implementation

Assessment Processes (Program, GlobalCampus, Student Learning)

GlobalCampus Academic Policies & Procedures

GlobalCampus Faculty Standards, Hiring & Policies and Procedures

University of Record and CEA Coordination

Bannister said, “I have been singularly impressed by the executive commitment to academic quality enhancement at CEA. Building on a period of unprecedented growth, CEO Brian Boubek has positioned CEA as an industry-leading organization. I believe my background in higher education program development, faculty recruitment and development as well as education abroad should complement CEA’s entrepreneurial culture well. I look forward especially to strengthening CEA’s links to major universities in the U.S. and overseas, and to engaging in the creation of a network of Global Campuses. This new project is attractive both because of its vision and its challenges. The opportunity to help lay the groundwork for this new initiative, knowing it has the funding and support it needs, is rare in higher education.”

Entering its tenth year in the field, CEA has experienced remarkable growth. Its study abroad programs in Barcelona alone have doubled in student enrollment in the past year. This success has positioned CEA with the network and resources to expand its offerings in dynamic and creative new ways offering college students more choices in overseas study programs.

About Cultural Experiences Abroad

CEA provides study abroad programs in Spain, the UK, Australia, Latin America and other European cities. Studying abroad gives students the opportunity for personal growth, global understanding, and to improve foreign language skills by studying French in France or Italian in Italy along with many other college courses in a variety of subject areas. CEA overseas study programs provide higher education programs abroad for college students from the United States and Canada.
